Valery Gergiev Conducts New Production at Metropolitan Opera, Concerts in Montreal, New York, Chicago
3/2/20
Valery Gergiev, Music Director of the Mariinsky Orchestra and Munich Philharmonic, will be making guest conducting appearances at The Metropolitan Opera and with North America’s top orchestras: New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra Symphonique de Montreal.
Gergiev made his Metropolitan Opera debut with Otello in 1994. He returns to The Met for François Girard’s revolutionary new production of Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer.
The Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal welcomes Gergiev for performances of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9, Bruckner’s final work before his untimely death. Although unfinished, it proves a remarkably satisfying musical experience, one that Gergiev immortalized in his acclaimed recording with the Munich Philharmonic.
“Gergiev’s interpretation of Bruckner’s Ninth is undoubtedly one that will live long in the memory.”
– Seen and Heard International, September 2018
Gergiev returns to the New York Philharmonic in a program of dazzling Russian folklore. The program opens with Rodion Shchedrin’s Concerto for Orchestra, titled Naughty Limericks. The program also includes Stravinsky’s spellbinding Petrushka and Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3, featuring powerful Russian pianist, Denis Matsuev.
“Matsuev brought such volcanic power, exquisite lyricism and absolute fluidity to the fiendishly demanding work that it felt as if he himself were writing the demonic piece on the spot.”
– WTTW, August 2019
Continuing his advocacy of Russian composers, Gergiev leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Shostakovich’s “Leningrad” Symphony, an anthem of Russian resistance during World War II.
“Gergiev’s approach to Shostakovich’s symphony proved gripping, driving the big moments home thrillingly.”
